Stuart, Florida residents may want to take note. The often prescribed drug, Zyprexa Relprevv is currently under investigation due to recent deaths believed to be associated with its use. Here's a look at what you should know about the situation:
The drug, Zyprexa Relprevv, is classified as an anti-psychotic. Manufactured by Eli Lilly & Company, it is an injectable version of the company's oral medication, Zyprexa. Even though it is not approved for such use, the oral version has been previously prescribed to people diagnosed with forms of dementia. The injectable version is specifically for, and frequently used, in the treatment of schizophrenia. Both versions have been connected to deaths over the years. To date, 84 people that used the injectable drug have died. Only the last two are being investigated at this time.
The injectable version of the drug has serious side effects that showed up in the clinical trials. One of them is the development of PDSS, also known as post-injection delirium/sedation syndrome. Symptoms associated with the syndrome include, but are not restricted to cognitive impairment, hypertension, dysarthria, convulsions and ataxia.
Additional serious side effects that have been associated with the drug, but not with PDSS are as follows:
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
- Altered body temperature
- Transient ischemic attacks
- Weakened immune system
