Two separate accidents on I-95 left six people dead in Flagler and St. Johns Counties in late May. According to a report from the Florida Times-Union, the first accident was caused when a northbound pickup drifted onto the shoulder and the driver, a 38-year-old male, over-corrected. The truck crossed the northbound lanes, struck a guardrail, and became airborne, later striking a car and another truck, both of which were traveling southbound. A 17-year-old passenger in the pickup was ejected and died from his injuries. The driver of the car that was struck was also killed.
The second accident was caused when a truck failed to stop for traffic from the first accident and rear ended other vehicles. The chain-reaction crash caused to tractor trailers and a car to erupt into flames. Four individuals died as a result of the second crash, including the driver of the truck that had failed to stop, as well as the drivers of two other vehicles, and a 1-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles.
