The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) started showing
advertisements for its
Click It or Ticket campaign in mid-May and the “enforcement period” has just
started today, May 23rd. Teaming up with law enforcement agencies around the country, the NHTSA
is encouraging the use of seatbelts around the clock and across the calendar.
Police are promising to amp up patrols on major highways, including the
I-95 and I-75 in Florida, from May 23rd to June 5th; most of the additional squad cars will be dispatched between 6:00 PM
and 6:00 AM, when NHTSA statistics show a spike in fatal
The campaign was relaunched after recent data showed that close to 50%
of all fatal car accidents in the county involved someone who was not
wearing their seatbelt. In certain states, that percentage was as high
as 70%. An unknown statistic of serious injuries were caused by a lack
of seatbelt use.
The Importance of Buckling Up
It should go without saying that seatbelt use is important. One simple
motion and a tiny little click can save your life in a serious car accident.
There are also no known downsides to seatbelts; the myth of seatbelts
trapping people in burning cars is unfounded and there is no evidence
to suggest “flying away from the wreckage” is a better option.
Beyond the safety benefits, seatbelts provide two other positives. First,
wearing your seatbelt will stop you from getting a ticket for not wearing
one. Wouldn’t you feel bad writing a check for a couple hundred
dollars to the state when you could have just click on your safety restraint?
Secondly, if you are not wearing a seatbelt when you are hurt in a car
accident, insurance companies will cut your claim to ribbons, stripping
you of almost any ability to gain compensation, even when you are not
the one at fault.
Protect yourself, your wallet, and your injury claim by wearing a seatbelt.
It is that simple and that effective. For more information, or to file
