Recently the Chicago City Council agreed to a settlement of $1.75 million to the family of a young, 13 year-old, girl who died due to negligent actions taken by paramedics on her way to the hospital. A tube was inserted through her mouth meant to help her breath, but instead cost her her life. The tube was supposed to go through her esophagus to the stomach; however, in the rush the tube went through her trachea and to her lungs.
Most unfortunately, the ambulance then went on to collide withanother car and because of a law in Illinois the ambulance driver had to stay on the site of the accident. They had to wait for another ambulance to arrive to transport the girl to the hospital. During the trial experts testified if the driver had chosen to simply keep driving the girl directly to the hospital, she would have survived the whole ordeal.
