A college student was drunk driving his father's BMW when he rear-ended a mini-van containing the Gonzalez family. The drunk driver, Stanley Bryant, was coming home from a weekend party with his fraternity brothers and had a blood alcohol level of .22 and was also underage. The Gonzalez family was returning home from church. Bryant struck the van so violently the van was forced into an oncoming lane of traffic, at which point they were hit head-on by another car. The van ripped open and caused the backseat containing two children with their seat belts on to be thrown about 30 feet into the highway.

Documentation proved the family had suffered multiple injuries and their medical bills were about $200,000. One of the children had fractures to the tibia and fibula on both of his legs. The fractures resulted in broken growth plates in the legs; two additional surgeries in the future will be needed. One of the growth plates sustained permanent damage and this will cause significant imbalance in the length of the child's legs. The jury awarded the family $1.78M.
