Tragic Rollover Crash

An Apopka family is grieving after a fatal accident on April 4th, according to News13. A Ford Expedition carrying members of the family overturned on the Florida Turnpike, just south of the Becker Road exit.

Details of the Incident

A Florida Highway Patrol report released April 5th states that the left rear tire tread separated, causing the driver, Oduver Miranda, 25, to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV, which was designed to seat up to 8 people safely, was carrying 12 passengers when it veered onto the shoulder and rolled over. Investigators say at least 6 of the passengers were unrestrained at the time of the accident.

Fatalities and Injuries Reported

Three people died and 9 others were injured in the crash, according to police reports. Uriel Miranda, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter Yaretsi Miranda, 2, died at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach later that day. Son Yordi Miranda, 8, was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Sunday afternoon.

Further Investigation

As of April 6th, it hadn't been determined why the tire tread separated. Could the tire have been defective? ABC News says:

Because of a badly flawed and archaic government recall system, millions of potentially dangerous recalled tires remain on the roads, on store shelves for sale, or simply unaccounted for, an ABC News investigation has found....But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the agency responsible for overseeing motor vehicle recall campaigns, does not offer any database searchable by a tire's DOT TIN number to see if it has been recalled.

It can be nearly impossible to determine if a given tire is defective because the imperfections are often very small. The consequences, however, can be huge. Defective tires can lead to blowouts when driving at high speeds, potentially causing the vehicle to roll. In 2010, more than 7600 people nationwide died as a result of a rollover crash.
