Martin County Personal Injury Attorney Discusses Alleged Wrong-way Driver and Tragic Results

Part of the Seminole Expressway remained closed for hours following a head-on crash allegedly caused by a wrong-way driver.

Traveling North in Southbound Lanes

According to a spokesperson with the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at about 2:45 a.m on July 11, near Rinehart Road in the Sanford area. A 49-year-old female motorist from Orlando was allegedly northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway when her vehicle struck an SUV head-on. The SUV, driven by a 25-year-old Geneva female, then overturned in the center median, according to WESH.

Another Vehicle Strikes Woman

At this point, the alleged wrong-way driver exited her vehicle and stood near it. Then, another vehicle, operated by a 49-year-old Longwood man, struck the original wrong-way vehicle. This impact sent the vehicle careening into the driver that was standing near it.

As a result of the injuries she sustained, the woman required transport to Central Florida Regional Medical Center in Sanford. However, she did not survive. The drivers of the other two vehicles suffered injuries, as did a 31-year-old passenger in the SUV. Further information about the treatment received was not initially available.

Blood Alcohol Test

Authorities suspected impaired driving on the part of the alleged wrong-way driver, so they conducted a blood alcohol test. The other drivers were not suspected of impaired driving. The expressway did not re-open until 9 a.m.

Although the investigation into this chain-reaction crash is in its earliest stages, Florida state law allows those injured because of the negligent conduct of others to seek redress in the state's civil courts. It is often possible to seek compensation for medical expenses, pain-and-suffering and lost wages.
