Hit-and-run Involving Bicyclist

Boynton Beach police were searching for an alleged hit-and-run motorist that struck a bicyclist on January 10, according to WFLA News.

Car Allegedly Strikes Bicyclist

The authorities state that the 65-year-old male bicyclist was allegedly struck by a silver or gray sedan while he was riding his bike on a sidewalk just outside of a community complex. The sedan was reportedly leaving the complex when the collision occurred.

Motorist Allegedly Flees

A preliminary investigation into the incident suggested that the driver of the sedan allegedly got out of the car and moved the bicycle out of his way before leaving the scene. The cyclist suffered injury in the accident, and he was left at the scene by the fleeing motorist.

Bicyclist Taken to Hospital

The injured man was subsequently transported to an area hospital so that he could be treated for serious injures that were reportedly not life threatening. There was no immediate update from the hospital regarding his condition. Police were asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward as the search for the hit-and-run motorist continued.

Impact of Hit-and-run Motorists

Hit-and-run accidents pose challenges for injured victims. State law allows individuals injured due to negligent conduct of others to seek compensation in Florida's civil courts, but it is necessary for identification of an offending motorist to occur before he or she becomes a defendant in a civil lawsuit.

Once identification of a hit-and-run driver occurs, negotiations with his or her insurer are possible. In some cases, the filing of a civil lawsuit follows. Such litigation often seeks compensation for an injured victim's medical expenses, pain, suffering and lost wages. When applicable, compensation is also sought for long-term rehabilitation and prescription drug expenses.
