Motorcycle Hit-and-Run in Sumter County

The Florida Highway Patrol has released details of a hit-and-run accident that involved a car and a motorcycle. The collision occurred in Sumter County on Saturday, April 11.

Accident Details

The FHP says that a Pontiac was westbound on County Road 466A, not far from Buena Vista Boulevard. As the Pontiac slowed down due to vehicles ahead, a 24-year-old male motorcyclist behind the car attempted to change lanes. Then, the Pontiac also changed lanes, allegedly striking the motorcycle.

Motorist Allegedly Flees

The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike, and he died where the collision occurred, according to the FHP. The motorist operating the Pontiac then allegedly fled the scene. Troopers began to look for the vehicle, but the next day a 25-year-old male from Fruitland Park contacted the state police, and he stated that he was the driver. The FHP says that charges are pending in the case.

Although the investigation into this particular accident is ongoing, in general, motorcyclists are often very vulnerable in crashes with cars, trucks and SUVs. However, Florida state law does provide a means for victims of certain crashes, or their survivors, to seek compensation in the civil courts. In many cases, it is possible to seek monetary damages for medical expenses, pain, suffering, lost wages and rehabilitation expenses. When a fatality occurs, it is often possible to seek compensation for loss of companionship and burial expenses.
