Eleventh U.S. Death Linked to Takata Airbags

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has confirmed that the September 30 death a California driver was indeed caused by a faulty Takata airbag. The incident marks the eleventh U.S. death linked to the infamous airbags in the midst of the auto industry's largest recall in history.

As Reuters reports, authorities have identified the woman as Delia Robles of Corona, California. Robles died in an accident late last month while driving her 2001 Honda Civic—a model that has been recalled numerous times for airbag concerns.

A spokesperson from Takata Corp. said that Robles' tragic death "underscores the importance of replacing those airbag inflators that have been recalled by automakers." Honda has confirmed that it has notified owners of the 2001 Honda Civic more than 20 times since 2008 about issues with the Takata airbags.

The Takata Recall

It's estimated that less than 11.5 million Takata airbags in the U.S. have been replaced, leaving still 20 million more unaccounted for. The NHTSA has flagged older 2001-2003 Honda and Acura models as being more susceptible to dangerous airbag deployments.

The following models are considered especially dangerous:

  • 2002 Honda CR-V
  • 2002 Honda Odyssey
  • 2003 Acura 3.2CL
  • 2003 Honda Pilot
  • 2001, 2002 Honda Civic
  • 2001, 2002 Honda Accord
  • 2002, 2003 Acura 3.2TL

Takata airbag inflators use a chemical reaction to deploy when the vehicle experiences an impact. However, investigators have found that when exposed to heat and moisture, the bag can deploy with too much force, sending shrapnel and debris into the vehicle cabin. Earlier this year, the NHTSA said that the number of total affected vehicles could rise to as much as 40 million by 2019.
