5 Injury Prevention Tips for a Safe 4th of July

Every year, the 4th of July brings millions of Americans together for the celebration of our country’s independence by partaking in exciting activities with friends, family, and loved ones. However, not all of these festivities are safe. Tragically, the 4th of July is one of the most dangerous holidays of the year. However you choose to participate, it is vital you take the right precautions to keep everyone safe and maintain the memories of this weekend as positively as possible.

Consider our tips for keeping your 4th of July celebrations free of any accidents or injuries:

  • Watch out for drunk drivers. Unfortunately, the increased number of people on the road equates an increased number of accidents and casualties. Countless people take advantage of the holiday weekend and this spike in traffic contributes many major injuries and fatalities, especially when people drink before getting behind the wheel. If possible, be sure to designate a sober driver, enlist the services of a ridesharing service, or call a taxi.
  • Fireworks can be fatal. Every year, thousands of people end up in emergency rooms due to a dangerous firework accident. The safest way to enjoy them is to stay as far back as possible, keep children supervised, have a fire extinguisher nearby, and only light fireworks in open spaces away from people or property.
  • Beware of drowning hazards. The holiday weekend is the perfect time for people to cool off at a neighbor’s pool or a family trip to the beach. Always swim in designated areas when there is a lifeguard present, use the buddy system, and never let children swim without supervision.
  • Grill safety is crucial. Nearly every 4th of July celebration involves some form of grilling or barbecuing, which can quickly become dangerous when people are distracted by holiday festivities. Make sure the grill is positioned away from any flammable areas and clean it regularly to avoid grease or fat buildup. Keep children away from the equipment and watch out for heavy flames.
