The 100 Deadliest Days of Summer

Summer break is one of the most exciting and anticipated times of the year, especially for teens who are itching to exercise their newfound freedom that comes with a set of keys and the open road. However, as we make plans for vacation and fun, it is important to remember that we are well into the 100 deadliest days of summer, the period that lasts from Memorial Day through Labor Day. During this time, the number of teen crash fatalities rise to unparalleled levels. According to, an unprecedented average of 260 teens die in car accidents every month during this period, which is a staggering 26% increase from the rest of the year.

Preventing these tragic fatalities from befalling our teens as well as the rest of our community is essential. AAA has identified the primary reasons behind crashes as speeding, drinking and driving, and distracted driving. The majority of these accidents are preventable in nature by employing safe driving practices to keep all drivers, pedestrians, and motorists safe. We offer the following tips to reduce these alarming statistics and ensure you and your loved ones’ wellbeing:

  • Drive defensively. Keep a safe distance from all other vehicles and never assume other driver’s state of mind. He or she may be under the influence or unwilling to obey traffic laws, so you should expect them to make mistakes and prepare for the worst.
  • Limit distractions as much as possible. Many people think cell phones are the only culprit to pulling our attention away from the road, but there are various hidden dangers that can impair your alertness. Talking to passengers, reaching over the seat, adjusting the radio, and eating are all irresponsible behaviors which may prevent you from anticipating and avoiding a potential accident.
  • Do not drink and drive. Under no circumstances should you get behind the wheel if you have consumed any alcohol. Select a designated driver or invest in an Uber or Lyft.
  • Buckle up. Over half of those killed in car crashes are not wearing a seatbelt and failing to do so puts your life on the line.
