1 Dead, 4 Injured in 3-Vehicle Crash in Stuart, FL //
On Friday, August 14, a 3-vehicle crash claimed one life and injured 4 others. A Martin County bus, a private ambulance, and a pickup truck were all involved in a collision shortly after 5 p.m. The crash occurred in Stuart, Florida along Southeast Velasquez Avenue near Southeast Seville Avenue when a private ambulance slammed into a Martin County bus. The ambulance was traveling south on Velasquez Avenue when it hit the bus traveling on Seville Street and collided with a parked pickup truck.
The 77-year-old patient in the back of the ambulance was secured on a stretcher at the time of the collision and pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death has not yet been determined, and the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. Both the drivers of the bus and the ambulance sustained minor injuries, along with a passenger in each vehicle.
Velasquez Avenue was blocked both ways for several hours on Friday, and the crash remains under investigation, according to WPTV NewsChannel 5.
Not a Typical Crash
In most car accidents, 2 independent drivers collide and handle the accident via private insurance. In this case, however, a county vehicle (the Martin County bus) and a commercial vehicle (the private ambulance) collided with a passenger vehicle (the pickup truck).
Although the crash is still under investigation, liability may be complex. The family of the deceased patient may need to file suit against the private ambulance driver and their employer, but if the bus driver was negligent in any way, those injured and bereaved by the crash may also need to file suit against Martin County.
