Brain-Damaged Model Awarded $29.5M After Negligent Ambulance Service

When you dial 911, you expect to receive lifesaving care as quickly as possible. Unfortunately for a model and aspiring actress, the substandard care she received led to lifelong brain damage instead. When the then 27-year-old accidentally consumed a small peanut butter pretzel during a fashion show at the Mandalay Bay South Convention Center, she went into anaphylactic shock, and neither of the responding medics had the equipment required to treat her – despite requirements from the Southern Nevada Health District.

Responding to Anaphylaxis

Although the medics used an intramuscular epinephrine injection (more commonly known as an EpiPen) on the young woman, she was going into full anaphylaxis and needed an IV of epinephrine to overcome the allergic reaction. Without the proper equipment, the model was deprived of oxygen for a period of minutes and suffered permanent brain damage. She is now quadriplegic, must be fed through a tube, and can only communicate with her eyes.

Due to the negligence of the ambulance company and in hopes of receiving compensation for their daughter’s care, the woman’s parents sued MedicWest Ambulance. The company denied any wrongdoing, but a Las Vegas jury awarded the family $29.5 million.

Securing Their Daughter's Future

Although the money offers little relief to the woman’s parents, who now spend their days caring for their severely disabled daughter, the now 35-year-old’s parents take some comfort in knowing their daughter will be taken care of. The victim’s parents plan to use money from the lawsuit to continue providing her with 24-hour care and purchasing a new home to better suit her needs.

They also told the New York Post they just hope “MedicWest changes their ways” and stops putting profits over patients.

If the medics had simply been better prepared, the aspiring actress could be adding to her list of credits, which included “The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations” and “Hollow Walls” instead of suffering the lifelong consequences of negligent medical care.
