Surgical Mesh Implants Injury

Vaginal Mesh: Have you experienced adverse
side effects?

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), vaginal mesh implants (also called urogynecologic surgical mesh implants) may be dangerous. In short, surgical mesh is a medical device used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP). It is usually created from absorbent or non-absorbent synthetic material or an absorbent biological substance and is used to treat POP and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). During the procedure, the material is permanently implanted to strengthen the weakened vaginal wall or support the urethra or bladder neck, effectively repairing SUI or POP.

Although vaginal mesh may sometimes be an effective medical treatment, it may not be safe. According to the FDA, serious adverse side effects are common. Last year, the FDA relates a safety communication update informing gynecologists, urogynecologiests, urologist, general surgeons, family doctors and internal medical specialist explaining the potential dangers of vaginal mesh implants. Erosion through the vagina was the most common complication. Erosion (also called exposure, extrusion or protrusion), results in pain, infection, bleeding, dyspareunia, organ perforation and urinary complications.

Adverse Side Effects of Vaginal Mesh

Studies conducted by the FDA showed that vaginal mesh is no more effective for treating POP and SUI as traditional medical procedures and treatments. Data take from 1996 to 2011 did not indicate that surgical mesh implants were necessarily effective or safe - especially compared to traditional treatment options. Although the FDA will continue to evaluate case studies and incoming date, medical testing thus far seems to indicate several things. Firstly, there are risks involved in mesh implant surgery that are not present in traditional repair procedures.

Additionally, vaginal mesh may not actually be useful for repairing certain types of POP. For example, there is no evidence indicating at surgically implanted mesh is useful for apical repair or posterior wall repair. Erosion - the most common vaginal mesh implant complication reported by the FDA - can be extremely painful and may require multiple surgeries to repair.

Some reports indicated that the mesh could contract, shorten, or tighten, which causes pain. Both of these complication lead to painful sexual intercourse, irritation and severe pelvic discomfort and pain. According to the FDA, these complications are not associated with a specific brand of vaginal mesh - the side effects are linked to the product itself.
